Hwajinpo is one of those places in Gangwon-do where nature and modern Korean history sit almost side by side.
On one side is Hwajinpo Lake, a huge natural lagoon surrounded by pine forest and reed beds.
On the other is the East Sea, with a long white-sand beach stretching along the coast.
And scattered around the lake are several historic villas once used by important political figures connected with Korea's turbulent twentieth century.
You can visit the former retreat associated with Kim Il-sung, walk through the former villa of South Korean president Syngman Rhee, see the villa of Lee Ki-poong, and still spend most of the day surrounded by water and pine trees.

On the coastal side is Hwajinpo Beach, a long stretch of pale sand facing the East Sea.

The beach itself remains a scenic place outside swimming season, but supervised swimming conditions are seasonal.

This is especially important on Korea's east coast.
High waves, strong currents or weather changes can lead to partial or full swimming restrictions even on a sunny summer day.
For example, Goseong County issued daily swimming-status notices during the 2026 season, and Hwajinpo was among beaches that were temporarily restricted on certain days.

The most famous historic building in the area is often called the Castle of Hwajinpo or the Villa of Kim Il-sung.
The stone building was originally constructed in 1938 by a German architect for the Sherwood Hall missionary family.
From 1948 to 1950, it was used as a summer retreat by Kim Il-sung and his family.
Photographs from that period include a young Kim Jong-il during a family visit.
Today, the building is open as a historical exhibit rather than a functioning residence.

On another part of Hwajinpo sits the former villa of Syngman Rhee, South Korea's first president.
This is what makes Hwajinpo historically unusual.
Within the same scenic area, visitors can see buildings associated with major figures from both North and South Korea.
The villa now contains preserved rooms, photographs and historical displays connected with Rhee's time there.
Current tourism information lists general operating hours around 09:00–18:00 with ticketing until 17:00, although hours can change seasonally.

The third major historic residence is the Villa of Lee Ki-poong.
For foreign visitors, his name may be less familiar than Kim Il-sung or Syngman Rhee.

πΆ 10. Is Hwajinpo a Walking Destination?
Partly.
You can enjoy individual sections on foot, but the Hwajinpo area is large enough that visiting every villa, lake viewpoint and beach section can become tiring if you try to walk everything.
A car makes the overall circuit much easier.
Once parked near a specific attraction, however, short walks around each site are pleasant.
The terrain varies from flat lakeside sections to small hills around the historic villas.
πΈ 11. The Best Views Are Not All From the Beach
Many visitors instinctively go straight to the sea.
But some of Hwajinpo's strongest photographs come from the lake side.
Reeds, still water and pine forest create a completely different atmosphere from the open East Sea.

If you only photograph the sand, you miss what makes Hwajinpo unique.

Autumn may be the best overall season for a history-focused visit.
The weather is cooler, the air can be clearer and the pine forest retains much of its color while other vegetation begins changing.
The area also becomes calmer after the main beach season ends.

You also avoid summer traffic and can visit the villas at a much slower pace.
The downside is shorter operating hours.

Yes.
