Choosing where to stay in Seoul can be harder than choosing a hotel.
Seoul is a huge city, and two hotels that look close on a map can give you completely different travel experiences.
For most first-time visitors, four areas come up again and again:
Myeongdong — best all-around choice for first-time visitors
Hongdae — best for nightlife, cafés, and younger travelers
Gangnam — best for modern Seoul, shopping, business, and nightlife south of the river
Insadong — best for palaces, traditional culture, and a quieter atmosphere
There is no single neighborhood that is best for everyone.
The right choice depends on what you want to do after you leave your hotel each morning — and what you want around you when you return at night.
Myeongdong: Best for Most First-Time Visitors
If someone visiting Seoul for the first time asked me where to stay without giving me any other information, I would probably start with Myeongdong.
Myeongdong is one of Seoul's major shopping and tourism districts, centered around Myeongdong Station and the surrounding streets. It also puts you relatively close to many central Seoul attractions.
That central location is Myeongdong's biggest advantage.
You can build sightseeing days around areas such as Namsan, Namdaemun, City Hall, Gwanghwamun, Jongno, and the palace districts without feeling as though you are crossing the entire city every morning.
For a visitor with only three or four days in Seoul, that convenience matters.
Who Should Stay in Myeongdong?
Myeongdong works particularly well for first-time visitors, couples, families, short stays, and travelers who want sightseeing to be simple.
It is also convenient if you enjoy returning to an area with plenty of shops and activity after a full day of exploring.
You are unlikely to feel isolated from the tourist side of Seoul.
The Main Advantage
The biggest benefit is not that every attraction is in Myeongdong.
It is that many different parts of central Seoul are reasonably easy to reach from there.
That makes it a good base, rather than simply a destination.
The Trade-Off
Myeongdong is very tourism-oriented.
If your dream is to wake up in a quiet residential neighborhood and feel surrounded mainly by everyday local life, Myeongdong may feel too commercial.
Some travelers love having everything nearby.
Others prefer an area with more neighborhood character.
My Take on Myeongdong
For a first trip of around three to five days, Myeongdong is the safest all-around choice among these four areas.
You can always explore trendier or quieter neighborhoods during the day without making your hotel location complicated.
Hongdae: Best for Energy, Nightlife and Younger Travelers
Hongdae has a very different personality.
The area around Hongik University is known for youthful culture, cafés, shopping, music, performances, restaurants, and nightlife. Official tourism guides describe Hongdae as one of Seoul's major centers of youth culture, art, music, and new trends.
This is the area I would recommend to someone who does not want the day to feel finished at 9 p.m.
Even after sightseeing elsewhere in Seoul, returning to Hongdae can feel like returning to another destination.
One Big Advantage for International Travelers
Hongik University Station is connected to the Airport Railroad, which makes the Hongdae area particularly convenient for some travelers arriving from or departing for Incheon International Airport. Korea Tourism Organization also highlights this airport-rail connection when discussing accommodation around Hongdae and Yeonnam-dong.
For someone traveling with luggage, airport connectivity can be a meaningful advantage.
Who Should Stay in Hongdae?
Hongdae is a strong choice for solo travelers, younger couples, friends traveling together, nightlife-focused visitors, café lovers, and anyone interested in contemporary Korean youth culture.
Nearby Yeonnam-dong also gives you access to a slightly more relaxed café-and-neighborhood atmosphere without being far from Hongdae's energy.
The Main Advantage
You do not have to travel somewhere else every evening to find something happening.
That can be surprisingly valuable.
You can spend your daytime sightseeing in other parts of Seoul, return to your hotel, rest for a while, and still have plenty to explore nearby at night.
The Trade-Off
Hongdae is west of many of Seoul's major historic attractions.
If your itinerary is heavily focused on palaces, Bukchon, Insadong, Gwanghwamun, and central historic Seoul, you may spend more time moving across the city than you would from Myeongdong or Insadong.
Noise is another consideration.
A hotel directly beside the busiest nightlife streets can feel very different from one several blocks away.
When booking, I would check the exact location rather than simply choosing anything labeled “Hongdae.”
My Take on Hongdae
Choose Hongdae if the neighborhood around your hotel is part of the experience you want.
If cafés, shopping, nightlife, music, and younger urban culture sound more exciting than being close to palaces, Hongdae may suit you better than Myeongdong.
Gangnam: Best for Modern Seoul and South-of-the-River Trips
Gangnam is probably the most internationally famous name on this list, but it is not automatically the best location for a first sightseeing trip.
The wider Gangnam area is associated with shopping, entertainment, business districts, cafés, restaurants, and contemporary trends. Official tourism information highlights areas around Gangnam Station and Samseong as major shopping and entertainment hubs.
Gangnam gives you a very different view of Seoul from the palace districts north of the river.
It feels more modern, commercial, and business-oriented.
Who Should Stay in Gangnam?
Gangnam makes sense for business travelers, visitors with appointments or events in southern Seoul, people interested in modern shopping and entertainment districts, and repeat visitors who have already explored central historic Seoul.
It can also be a good fit if many of the places on your itinerary are around Gangnam, Samseong, COEX, Sinsa, Apgujeong, or nearby southern districts.
The Main Advantage
If your itinerary is concentrated south of the Han River, staying in Gangnam can save a lot of unnecessary cross-city travel.
This is something travelers sometimes overlook.
They book a hotel because an area is famous, then spend every day traveling to the opposite side of Seoul.
Your hotel should support your itinerary, not fight against it.
The Trade-Off
For a first-time visitor whose priority list includes Gyeongbokgung Palace, Bukchon, Insadong, Myeongdong, Gwanghwamun, and other central or northern Seoul attractions, Gangnam can be less convenient as a base.
It is not “far away” in the sense that you cannot reach those places.
Seoul's transportation network connects the city well.
But repeatedly traveling north and south can add unnecessary time to a short trip.
My Take on Gangnam
I would not choose Gangnam just because the name is famous.
Choose it because your actual itinerary is concentrated in that part of Seoul.
For the right traveler, it is excellent.
For a first-time visitor focusing mainly on classic Seoul sightseeing, I would usually choose Myeongdong or Insadong first.
Insadong: Best for Traditional Seoul
If the part of Korea you are most excited about is palaces, hanok architecture, crafts, tea houses, traditional streets, and historic neighborhoods, Insadong deserves serious consideration.
Official Seoul tourism information describes Insadong as an area in central Seoul known for traditional culture, art, antiques, crafts, and old-Seoul atmosphere.
It also places you close to some of Seoul's most important historic sightseeing areas.
Nearby districts such as Jongno, Bukchon, Ikseon-dong, and the palace areas can become part of your everyday surroundings rather than separate day trips. Bukchon itself sits between major Joseon-era palace and shrine areas and remains one of Seoul's best-known hanok districts.
Who Should Stay in Insadong?
Insadong is particularly good for couples, cultural travelers, photographers, visitors interested in traditional Korea, and travelers who prefer a calmer evening atmosphere.
It can also be excellent for a second or third trip when you want to explore Seoul more slowly.
The Main Advantage
Your morning can begin in one of Seoul's most atmospheric historic districts.
Instead of taking transportation to experience traditional Seoul, you can simply walk outside and start exploring.
For travelers who like early morning walks and quieter streets, that can completely change the feel of a trip.
The Trade-Off
Insadong does not have the same late-night energy as Hongdae.
And if your priority is modern shopping, clubs, or the newest trends, the atmosphere may feel too quiet.
The exact hotel location also matters because “Insadong” accommodation can sometimes extend into surrounding Jongno areas.
Check the map rather than relying only on the neighborhood name in the hotel listing.
My Take on Insadong
If your picture of Seoul includes palace roofs, hanok alleys, traditional crafts, and morning walks through historic neighborhoods, Insadong may actually be better than Myeongdong for you.
It is less of an all-purpose choice, but it can create a stronger sense of place.
Myeongdong vs Hongdae
This is probably the most common decision for first-time visitors.
I would choose Myeongdong if sightseeing convenience is the priority.
I would choose Hongdae if the area around the hotel and evening atmosphere are part of the trip.
Think about what happens after dinner.
If you expect to go back to the hotel and sleep before another sightseeing day, Myeongdong makes a lot of sense.
If you expect to rest for an hour and then go back outside at 10 p.m., Hongdae becomes much more attractive.
Myeongdong vs Insadong
Both work well for central Seoul.
The difference is atmosphere.
Myeongdong feels commercial, busy, convenient, and international.
Insadong feels more historic, traditional, and relaxed.
For a very short first trip, I would lean toward Myeongdong.
For someone whose main interest is Korean history and traditional culture, I would lean toward Insadong.
Hongdae vs Gangnam
Both offer modern Seoul, but they are not the same.
Hongdae feels younger, more casual, creative, and nightlife-oriented.
Gangnam feels larger-scale, more commercial, more business-oriented, and more connected to southern Seoul's shopping and entertainment districts.
Your daily itinerary should decide between them.
Do Not Choose a Hotel by Neighborhood Name Alone
This is one of the most important accommodation tips I can give.
After choosing a neighborhood, check the exact location of the hotel.
A property may advertise itself as being in a famous area while actually requiring a significant walk to the station or the part of the neighborhood you want to visit.
Before booking, look at:
the nearest station, walking distance to that station, the route from the station to the hotel, nearby major roads, and recent guest comments about noise or hills.
A five-minute difference on a hotel map can feel much bigger when you are carrying luggage.
Staying Near a Station Matters More Than Having a Famous Hotel
For most visitors, I would rather stay at a good hotel close to a useful station than a more luxurious hotel in an inconvenient location.
You will probably leave the hotel every morning and return every evening.
That walk becomes part of your trip.
The difference between a three-minute walk and a fifteen-minute walk may not sound important when booking from home.
After a full day of sightseeing, it can feel very important.
What About Families?
For families on their first trip, I would usually start by looking around Myeongdong and nearby central areas.
The reason is simple: flexibility.
If children get tired, if plans change, or if you want to return to the hotel during the day, a central location can make that easier.
Families focused heavily on cultural sightseeing could also consider Insadong.
What About Solo Travelers?
Solo travelers have more freedom.
If you enjoy meeting people, nightlife, cafés, and activity around your accommodation, Hongdae is a strong option.
If you prefer exploring historic Seoul early in the morning and returning somewhere quieter at night, Insadong can be excellent.
There is no need to stay in the most famous district simply because you are traveling alone.
What About a Very Short Seoul Trip?
For a two- or three-night first visit, I would prioritize location efficiency.
That usually pushes Myeongdong toward the top of my list.
You have limited time, so reducing unnecessary cross-city travel is more valuable than choosing the trendiest neighborhood.
What About a Week or Longer?
With a longer stay, neighborhood atmosphere becomes more important.
You will have enough time to travel across Seoul without feeling that every subway ride is taking away from sightseeing.
For a week-long stay, Hongdae, Insadong, or even Gangnam can make more sense depending on your interests.
You could also split your accommodation between two areas, although I would only do this if there is a clear reason.
Changing hotels also costs time.
My Ranking for a First Trip to Seoul
For a typical first-time visitor with no special requirements, my order would be:
1. Myeongdong — easiest overall base
2. Insadong — excellent for history and traditional Seoul
3. Hongdae — excellent if nightlife and youth culture matter
4. Gangnam — best when your itinerary is actually focused south of the river
But this is not a ranking of which neighborhood is “better.”
It is a ranking based on the needs of a typical first-time sightseeing trip.
Someone coming specifically for nightlife could easily put Hongdae first.
A business traveler could put Gangnam first.
A history-focused traveler could put Insadong first.
A Local's Final Tip
Before choosing your Seoul hotel, do not ask:
“Which neighborhood is the most famous?”
Ask:
“Where will I spend most of my time?”
Then choose a hotel that makes those days easier.
For most first-time visitors, Myeongdong is the simplest answer.
For nightlife, choose Hongdae.
For modern southern Seoul, choose Gangnam.
For traditional Seoul, choose Insadong.
The best area is the one that matches the trip you actually want to have.
