In Korea, visitors can hail a licensed taxi on the street, use an official taxi stand or request one through a ride-hailing app. An app is often easier because the destination is entered before pickup and the vehicle information is recorded. The estimate shown in an app may not be the final fare: meter charges, late-night surcharges and tolls can still apply.
Choose a pickup method
Use a taxi stand at airports and major stations, or choose a well-lit roadside location where stopping is legal. In an app, place the pickup pin on the correct side of a divided road and compare the Korean address with a nearby landmark. At busy times, walking one block away from a congested entrance can make pickup clearer.

k.ride, Uber and other taxi apps
Kakao Mobility’s k.ride is designed for international visitors. Uber in Korea may also dispatch licensed taxis rather than private cars, so check the service category shown in the app. Availability, payment methods and language support can change; install and verify an app before the evening you need it.
Understand the meter and surcharges
Seoul’s official taxi page currently lists the standard regular-taxi base fare as KRW 4,800 for the first 1.6 kilometers and explains time, distance and late-night charging. Late-night surcharges apply during designated hours and the highest rate is within the narrower overnight period. These rules can change and other cities set their own fares, so check the local official page rather than relying on an old screenshot.

Late-night pickup strategy
- Save the hotel name and full Korean address offline.
- At entertainment districts, move to a legal pickup lane or designated stand.
- Confirm the plate number before entering and follow the route on a Korean map app.
- If demand is high, compare public night-bus options rather than repeatedly changing the destination.
- Do not accept an unlicensed ride offered by a stranger.
Airport taxis and luggage
Use the official taxi queue and follow airport signs. Ignore unsolicited ride offers inside the terminal. Confirm whether your luggage fits the vehicle type before booking; a regular sedan may not suit several passengers with large suitcases. Tolls can be added to the metered fare.
