Ho-Am Art Museum in Yongin is one of the best places near Seoul to combine Korean art, contemporary exhibitions and a beautiful traditional garden in a single visit.
The museum opened in 1982 using a collection assembled by Samsung founder Lee Byung-chul, but today's Ho-Am is not simply a museum of traditional Korean art.

For many visitors, Hee Won is just as memorable as the museum itself.
The traditional Korean garden opened in 1997 and was designed around the Korean landscaping idea of borrowed scenery, or chagyeong.
Instead of separating the garden from the surrounding mountains and landscape, the design incorporates distant scenery into the composition.
As you walk through the garden, buildings, ponds, stone walls and trees appear and disappear naturally along the route.

Ho-Am Art Museum has expanded beyond temporary indoor exhibitions with permanent outdoor works by internationally renowned Korean artist Lee Ufan.
Inside Hee Won Garden, visitors can experience Lee Ufan's Silentium, also titled Muksiam in Korean.
The installation combines natural stone, space and subtle human intervention.
Rather than demanding attention with bright colors or large decorative elements, it encourages visitors to slow down and notice the relationship between stone, shadow, surrounding nature and empty space.

Across from Hee Won is the Old Stone Garden, another outdoor area that combines Korean landscape scenery with contemporary art.
Lee Ufan's outdoor installations use natural stone and industrial materials to create a dialogue between nature and human-made objects.
The gently elevated walking area also offers views toward the museum and surrounding lake.
This is one of the reasons I recommend allowing more time than you would for a normal indoor museum visit.
The outdoor spaces are part of the experience, not simply a path between buildings.

Ho-Am Art Museum first opened on April 22, 1982.
The museum was created around Korean artworks collected over more than three decades by Samsung founder Lee Byung-chul.
In 2023, the museum underwent an interior renovation to improve exhibition conditions and visitor facilities.
