Hallasan Yeongsil Trail: Upper Trailhead, Witseoreum and Seasonal Cutoffs

Yeongsil offers a climb through Hallasan’s rocky scenery toward Witseoreum. The distance quoted online often starts at the upper trailhead, which may not be where your bus or car journey ends. Work out your real starting point before deciding whether the hike fits your day.

The 3.7 km figure starts at the upper trailhead

The official Yeongsil route page lists 3.7 km from the upper rest area to Witseoreum and another 2.1 km to the South Wall junction. It also describes an additional approach of about 2.4 km from the lower office to the upper rest area.

That makes your arrival arrangement important. A 7.4 km return hike from the upper trailhead does not include walking up from the lower office. Ask where your current transport can drop you off and budget the approach separately; do not add it as an afterthought after the mountain walk.

Expect a climb before the higher plateau

The park describes a steep section beside the cliffs followed by higher, more open terrain. Its approximate ascent time is not a guarantee for your group. Leave additional time for breaks and descending steps, particularly if you are unused to sustained climbing.

Choose Witseoreum as a clear destination if you want the shorter option. Continuing to the South Wall junction adds walking and time controls. Yeongsil does not reach the Baengnokdam summit; a broad mountain view is a different experience from standing at the summit crater.

Plan around entry and descent deadlines

The park’s applicable seasonal notice lists entry by 12:00 in October–March and 15:00 in April–September. Witseoreum descent limits are 15:00 and 17:00 respectively. Weather restrictions can override the normal times.

Start with a comfortable margin rather than aiming to pass the gate at the cutoff. If a late arrival leaves little time, choose another activity instead of rushing the climb. Check current announcements before travelling to the trailhead and follow the day’s instructions on site.

No summit booking does not remove the need to prepare

The official Hallasan guide identifies Yeongsil among the trails without the summit-route reservation requirement. Route access, road conditions and parking are still separate questions. A parking place should never be assumed just because a trail booking is unnecessary.

Bring drinking water, food, grip shoes and layers for wind and rain. Keep useful items accessible without unpacking the whole bag on a narrow section. In poor visibility, follow the signed route and turn back if conditions or your group’s pace no longer fit your plan.

Make the descent match your return transport

If you descend by Eorimok, you will finish away from a vehicle left at Yeongsil. Arrange that transfer in advance or return along the same route. Check the current bus connection from your actual stopping point, including any walk between the office and the bus stop.

Search 영실 탐방로 and distinguish the lower office from the upper trailhead on the map. Leave time after the hike for a slow meal and the return journey; a distant, tightly timed attraction is difficult to combine with uncertain mountain conditions.
