Most high-mountain viewpoints in Korea demand a long climb. Balwangsan Cable Car offers a different route: an 18-minute ride from Mona YongPyong Resort carries visitors to the upper area of Balwangsan Mountain, 1,458 meters above sea level.
The ride is only the beginning. At the top, you can step onto the Balwangsan Ki Skywalk, follow a forest deck toward ancient yew trees and look across the ridges of the Daegwallyeong highlands. The summit can feel cool and quiet even when the resort base is busy.

Where Is the Balwangsan Cable Car?

Why the Cable Car Ride Is Part of the Experience
Balwangsan is not a short observation ride. The line covers 3.7 kilometers in each direction, making a 7.4-kilometer round trip. The cabin climbs for about 18 minutes, long enough to watch the resort buildings give way to ski slopes, dense forest and increasingly distant mountain ridges.
The system uses eight-passenger cabins. The operator notes that separate groups may share a cabin when the queue is busy, so couples should not assume they will always ride alone. If views matter more than conversation, take the clearest available window rather than waiting for a particular direction of travel.
A round-trip ticket is the practical choice for most sightseers. Buy a one-way ticket only if you have already checked a suitable hiking route, trail conditions and return transportation.
Balwangsan Ki Skywalk
The Balwangsan Ki Skywalk is the summit area's best-known viewpoint. Mona YongPyong describes the cantilevered structure as 64 meters long, with a central sky plaza and a rotating platform designed for broad views across the Baekdudaegan mountain range.
It feels more like an open mountain observatory than an extreme glass-floor attraction. On a clear day, overlapping ridges fill the horizon. In fog, the same platform can sit inside a bank of cloud with almost no distant view, which is why checking the summit webcam is as important as checking the temperature at the resort base.
Strong wind, lightning or other unsafe conditions can stop the cable car without much notice. The upper mountain can also be colder, windier and cloudier than Dragon Plaza. Check both the operating status and summit visibility before leaving.
Thousand-Year Yew Forest Trail
Do not ride down as soon as you have photographed the Skywalk. The Thousand-Year Yew Forest Trail gives the visit a quieter second half, with old yew trees, twisted trunks and high-altitude vegetation along the upper mountain.
Mona YongPyong describes the full forest route as approximately 3.2 kilometers and about 90 minutes round trip. You do not need to complete all of it; a shorter out-and-back walk still provides a useful contrast to the open observation deck. The developed deck sections are designed to be more accessible than a normal mountain trail, but snow, ice and maintenance can affect which sections are comfortable or open.
Allow at least one hour for the Skywalk and a short forest walk. Set aside closer to two hours if you want to follow most of the yew trail without rushing.

Can You Bring a Dog?
Yes, under the resort's current rules. Small and medium dogs weighing less than 25 kilograms and measuring under 50 centimeters in height may ride in a fully enclosed carrier or pet bag. The dog's head and body must remain inside during the cable car ride.
Bring proof of vaccination and waste bags. A leash under two meters is required in the outdoor area. Dogs are allowed on the yew forest trail, but not on the Ki Skywalk or inside the summit restaurant. The operator currently lists no additional cable car charge for an eligible dog.
A soft bag that leaves the dog's head outside does not meet the stated boarding rule. Use a carrier that closes completely and bring the required documents.
Best Season to Visit Balwangsan
Spring
Spring reaches the summit later than it reaches Seoul or the resort base. Early in the season, the upper mountain may still look wintry. Late spring brings greener forest scenery, but a light jacket remains useful at this elevation.
Summer
Summer is a comfortable time for the yew forest and wildflowers. The summit is usually cooler than the lowlands, although cloud and afternoon rain can reduce visibility. Bring a thin outer layer and rain protection even on a warm day.
Autumn
Autumn combines foliage with clearer long-distance views. Color changes at different times along the elevation, so the cable car can move through several stages of autumn during one ride. Weekdays are preferable when foliage crowds build.
Winter
Snow turns Balwangsan into its most dramatic version. Frosted trees and white ski slopes look impressive from the cabin, but the summit can be bitterly cold and icy. Because the cable car removes the climb, visitors generate little body heat and often need more insulation than expected.

Getting There Without a Car
KTX trains connect Seoul with Jinbu Station. A taxi from Jinbu Station takes roughly 20 minutes in normal road conditions. This is the safer backup when the shuttle does not match your train or reaches capacity.

Families, Older Travelers and Accessibility
The cable car removes the strenuous ascent, which makes Balwangsan practical for families and older visitors who would not attempt a summit hike. Each group can decide how far to walk after reaching the top: the Skywalk and a short section of the forest are enough for a satisfying visit.
The upper area is still a real mountain environment. Wind, snow and ice can make outdoor surfaces difficult, and boarding a moving cable car may require assistance. Wheelchair or stroller users should contact the operator before visiting to confirm the day's accessible route and equipment restrictions.
