You arrive in Korea.
You open the map app you always use at home.
You search for a restaurant.
Then something strange happens.
The address looks slightly different.
The walking route is not what you expected.
Or the small café you are trying to find is easier to locate in a Korean map app.
This is why one of the first apps I recommend to international visitors is a local Korean map app.
For most tourists, the two names you should know are:
NAVER Map and KakaoMap.
Both can help you find subway routes, buses, restaurants, cafés, attractions and walking directions throughout Korea.
But they are not exactly the same.
Here is how I would choose between them in 2026.
Why Use a Korean Map App?
Korean map apps are built around Korean addresses, local businesses and Korea's public transportation system.
The Korea Tourism Organization currently recommends NAVER Map as a major travel tool and notes that it provides route suggestions and estimated travel times for walking, cycling, driving and public transportation. It also connects place searches with information such as business hours, reviews and related links.
For a tourist, this means one app can often answer several questions at once:
Where is this restaurant?
Which subway should I take?
Which exit should I use?
Is the café still open?
How long will the bus take?
What do Korean customers say about the place?
That is why installing a Korean map app before arriving in Korea can save a surprising amount of time.
NAVER Map: My First Recommendation for Most Tourists
If you want to install only one Korean map app before your trip, I would start with NAVER Map.
The Korea Tourism Organization describes NAVER Map as the most widely used online map among Koreans and says it supports route planning as well as information about restaurants, cafés and attractions.
NAVER has also invested heavily in making the app easier for international visitors.
It supports Korean, English, Chinese and Japanese interfaces, and multilingual support has expanded to business information, place filters and translated user reviews.
That last feature is especially useful.
A restaurant may have hundreds of reviews written in Korean.
Instead of ignoring them because you cannot read Korean, NAVER Map can translate many of those reviews into supported languages.
What Can You Do With NAVER Map?
For a normal Korea trip, you can use it for almost everything related to movement and places.
Search for a café.
Find the closest subway station.
Compare bus and subway routes.
Check estimated travel times.
Look up opening hours.
Read translated reviews.
Save locations you want to visit.
Build your own list of restaurants and attractions.
The Korea Tourism Organization specifically notes NAVER Map's bookmark function, which lets users save locations and create their own place lists.
That is very useful when planning a multi-day Seoul trip.
Instead of repeatedly searching for the same locations, save them before you leave your hotel.
A Big 2026 Change for Foreign Tourists
There is one NAVER update international visitors should know about.
In June 2026, NAVER introduced passport verification for foreign users.
Foreign passport holders can now verify their identity on a smartphone without having a Korean mobile phone number and use supported NAVER travel services such as bookings, orders and payments through NAVER Map.
This addresses one of the most frustrating problems tourists previously encountered in Korea:
Finding a restaurant or venue online but then discovering that the reservation system required Korean identity verification or a Korean phone number.
Not every business or service will necessarily use the same booking system, but NAVER's new passport-based system makes the app much more useful to short-term visitors than it used to be.
Do You Need a NAVER Account?
You can use basic map functions without turning every trip into an account-management project.
But an account becomes more useful if you want to save places or use supported booking and payment services.
If you plan to use NAVER heavily during your trip, setting it up before you start sightseeing is easier than trying to create accounts while standing outside a restaurant.
For foreign travelers who need eligible verification features, NAVER's 2026 passport verification system no longer requires a Korean mobile number.
How to Search for Places More Accurately
This is one of the most useful habits to learn.
If an English search does not immediately find the correct location, try copying the Korean place name or Korean address.
For example, your hotel reservation may show both an English name and a Korean name.
Save both.
The same applies to restaurants.
If a travel blog, Instagram post or hotel staff member gives you the Korean business name, copy that version into NAVER Map.
It can help distinguish between businesses with similar translated names.
KakaoMap: The Other Major Option
KakaoMap is also extremely useful in Korea.
Kakao describes the app as providing routes for:
Public transportation, cars, walking and bicycles.
The company says route information uses frequently updated data, and KakaoMap includes navigation without requiring a separate navigation app.
KakaoMap can also show nearby restaurants and popular places, making it useful when you have not decided exactly where you want to go.
One KakaoMap Feature Tourists May Like
KakaoMap can send notifications related to public transportation.
Kakao says the app can notify users when it is time to get on or off public transportation.
This can be helpful when you are riding a bus through an unfamiliar neighborhood.
Instead of staring constantly at the map and worrying that you will miss your stop, you can use the route information as additional guidance.
I still recommend watching the stop information on the bus or subway itself, but the app can provide another layer of reassurance.
Kakao Is Also Building More Services for Foreign Visitors
Kakao has been actively trying to make its travel ecosystem easier for international tourists.
Its travel services include KakaoMap and K.ride, a ride-hailing service designed for international users. Kakao says KakaoMap can show popular restaurants and attractions nearby as well as real-time subway and bus locations.
That makes KakaoMap particularly useful if you also plan to use other Kakao services during your trip.
NAVER Map vs KakaoMap: Which Should You Choose?
For most first-time visitors, I would choose NAVER Map as the main app.
Its place information, translated reviews, business details and increasingly tourist-friendly services make it especially useful for travelers who spend a lot of time searching for restaurants, cafés and attractions.
I would keep KakaoMap as a second option.
It is excellent for Korean routing and public transportation, and it can be useful when you want to compare directions or when a particular place is easier to locate there.
There is no rule saying you must choose only one.
Both apps are free to use, so having both gives you a backup.
What About Google Maps?
You do not have to delete Google Maps.
It can still be useful for saved international travel lists, reviews, general place discovery and sharing locations with people who already use Google Maps.
But when you are physically moving around Korea, it is smart to have NAVER Map or KakaoMap installed as well.
Korea Tourism Organization travel guidance consistently highlights Korean map services such as NAVER Map for local routing and travel information.
My own practical approach would be:
Use whatever app you like for general trip planning.
Use NAVER Map or KakaoMap when you need detailed local directions inside Korea.
How to Find the Correct Subway Exit
This is where your map app becomes extremely useful.
In Seoul, knowing the correct subway station is only half the job.
You also need the right exit number.
Large stations can have many exits.
Choosing the wrong exit may leave you on the opposite side of a huge intersection or several blocks away from your destination.
Before leaving the train, check:
Station name → Transfer information → Exit number → Walking route
Do not wait until you are already outside the station.
How to Use the Map for Korean Buses
Buses can initially feel harder than the subway because the streets are unfamiliar.
Use your map app to check the route before boarding.
Confirm the bus number.
Confirm the direction.
Watch your location as the bus moves.
Prepare to get off before your stop.
KakaoMap specifically supports public-transport routing and can provide notifications associated with getting on and off transit.
Once you become comfortable using map apps, buses become much less intimidating.
Save Your Hotel Immediately
This is one of the first things I would do after checking into a hotel.
Save the hotel in NAVER Map.
Do not rely only on remembering the name.
Your hotel may have a similar name to another property.
Save the exact branch.
Then, wherever you are in Seoul, you can simply search your saved location and find the route back.
This is especially useful late at night when you are tired.
Save Places by Neighborhood
Instead of creating one enormous list called “Korea,” organize your saved places by area.
For example:
Myeongdong Day
Hongdae Day
Seongsu Day
Jongno & Palaces
Busan
This makes itinerary planning much easier.
If you are standing in Seongsu and have three saved cafés nearby, you can choose the closest one instead of traveling across the city unnecessarily.
Check Business Hours Before Traveling Across Seoul
A place appearing on a map does not automatically mean it is open when you arrive.
Before traveling 40 minutes for a restaurant or café, check:
Opening time.
Closing time.
Regular days off.
Whether reservations are required.
NAVER Map integrates business information and related place details, and its multilingual support has expanded to business hours and convenience information.
That can prevent one of the most annoying travel experiences:
Traveling across Seoul only to find a locked door.
Read the Most Recent Reviews
Do not judge a restaurant only by a review written three years ago.
Menus change.
Ownership changes.
Operating hours change.
Popular places can become extremely crowded.
NAVER Map's translated review support makes recent Korean-language reviews much more accessible to international users.
Use recent reviews to look for information about:
Waiting times.
Reservation requirements.
Popular dishes.
Temporary closures.
Whether a place is still worth visiting.
Use Map Apps Before You Leave the Hotel
Do not wait until you are standing on a busy sidewalk with a suitcase to figure everything out.
Before leaving your hotel, take 30 seconds to check your first route.
Look at the subway line.
Transfer station.
Exit number.
Walking distance.
Estimated arrival time.
Then start moving.
That tiny habit makes travel in Korea much easier.
What If Your Phone Loses Data?
Take screenshots of important information when you have Wi-Fi.
Save:
Your hotel name.
Korean hotel address.
First destination.
Important reservation details.
A map app is incredibly useful, but your entire trip should not collapse because your phone temporarily loses its internet connection.
My Recommended Korea Navigation Setup
For a first-time international visitor, I would keep things simple.
Install NAVER Map as your primary local map app.
Install KakaoMap as a backup and alternative for transportation routes.
Save your hotel immediately.
Save major destinations before leaving each morning.
Keep Korean place names whenever possible.
Check the subway exit before leaving the station.
Look at recent business information before traveling a long distance.
That is enough.
You do not need to become an expert in Korean geography.
The Most Important Tip
Do not assume you are bad at navigating Korea because the first day feels confusing.
Everyone needs time to understand a new city.
Seoul has enormous subway stations, underground shopping areas, multiple exits and buildings stacked vertically on different floors.
Even Koreans check map apps constantly.
After a few days, you will probably stop thinking about it.
You will open NAVER Map, check the route, find the correct subway exit and start walking.
And that is the point when Korea begins to feel much easier.
