The two cities feel completely different.
Seoul is fast, crowded and packed with palaces, shopping districts and nightlife. Busan has beaches, seafood markets, coastal views and a much more relaxed atmosphere.
But there is one question almost every first-time traveler asks:
What is the best way to get from Seoul to Busan?
The short answer is simple:
For most international tourists, the KTX is the easiest choice.
But depending on your budget, hotel location and travel schedule, the SRT, express bus or a domestic flight may make more sense.
Here is a local-style comparison to help you choose.
The KTX is Korea's main high-speed train.
It connects Seoul Station with Busan Station, and the trip takes roughly 3 hours depending on the train and stops. Korea Tourism Organization information published in 2026 lists the Seoul–Busan KTX journey at approximately 3 hours 20 minutes.
For most visitors, this is the option I recommend first.
Why?
You travel from city center to city center.
You do not need to travel to an airport, arrive far in advance, go through airport security or wait for checked luggage.
Once you arrive at Busan Station, you are already connected to Busan's subway system.

Short Korea itineraries
Anyone who wants the simplest option
Try to book a morning train if you want to use your arrival day for sightseeing.
Leaving Seoul early means you can arrive in Busan around lunchtime and still have most of the afternoon available.
Popular trains can sell out during weekends, Korean holidays and major events, so booking ahead is a good idea.
Many foreign visitors know the KTX but do not know about the SRT.
SRT high-speed trains depart from Suseo Station in southeastern Seoul rather than Seoul Station.
Official 2026 tourism information lists the Suseo-to-Busan trip at approximately 2 hours 30 minutes.
This can be a very good option if your hotel is around:
Gangnam
Jamsil
Songpa
Suseo
Southeastern Seoul
If you are staying around Myeongdong, Hongdae or Seoul Station, however, traveling across Seoul to Suseo may cancel out much of the time you save.
Travelers staying in the Gangnam or Jamsil area who want a fast trip directly to Busan.
You can also travel from Seoul to Busan by express bus.
Buses leave from Seoul's major bus terminals and connect with Busan's terminals.
Official Korea Tourism Organization guidance lists the express-bus journey from Seoul Express Bus Terminal to Busan at approximately 4 hours, although actual travel time can become longer when traffic is heavy.
Express buses are comfortable by normal international bus standards, and different seat classes may be available depending on the route.
Bus tickets can be purchased through official or affiliated booking services, or directly from ticket counters and kiosks at terminals.
A train trip is relatively predictable.
A bus trip depends much more on road conditions.
Friday evenings, Sunday afternoons and holiday periods can be especially busy.

People who are not in a hurry
Travelers who cannot find a suitable train

Yes, you can fly between Seoul and Busan.
Domestic flights operate between Gimpo International Airport in Seoul and Gimhae International Airport in Busan, and scheduled flight time is usually around one hour. Korea Airports Corporation lists regular Gimpo–Gimhae services.
At first, flying sounds much faster than taking the train.
But tourists should think about the total journey, not just the flight time.
You need to:
Travel from your hotel to Gimpo Airport → check in → pass security → board → fly → leave Gimhae Airport → travel into Busan.
That means a one-hour flight can turn into a much longer door-to-door journey.
You find a very cheap airfare
Your Seoul hotel is close to Gimpo Airport
Your Busan destination is convenient from Gimhae Airport
You are connecting to another flight
KTX tickets are unavailable
For an ordinary Seoul-to-Busan sightseeing trip, however, the train is usually simpler.
Approximate travel time: Around 3 hours
Main advantage: Easy city-center-to-city-center travel
Best for: Most international tourists
Approximate travel time: Around 2.5 hours
Main advantage: Fast option from southern Seoul
Best for: Gangnam, Jamsil and Suseo-area travelers
Approximate travel time: Around 4 hours or more
Main advantage: Budget-friendly alternative
Best for: Travelers with flexible schedules
Flight time: Around 1 hour, plus airport time
Main advantage: Useful when airfare or location works in your favor
Best for: Specific schedules and airport connections
For a normal Seoul-to-Busan trip, I would usually choose the KTX.
It is not always the cheapest option.
It is not always the fastest transportation when you look only at the time spent inside the vehicle.
But for tourists, convenience matters.
You can leave central Seoul, sit down, relax and arrive directly in central Busan without dealing with airports or highway traffic.
If you are staying around Gangnam or Jamsil, I would compare the SRT first.
If saving money matters more than saving time, check the express bus.
I would only choose a flight when the ticket price or airport location makes it clearly worthwhile.
There is no essential "best side" for the entire Seoul-to-Busan journey.
Instead, focus on comfort.
If you are traveling with large luggage, arriving a little early makes boarding less stressful.
Also check your carriage and seat number before the train arrives.
Korean high-speed trains usually stop for only a short time at intermediate stations, so be ready before reaching your destination.
Yes.
KORAIL operates online train reservation services, and KTX connects Seoul with major cities including Busan.
Before paying, always check:
Departure station
Arrival station
Departure date
Departure time
Train type
Seat number
One mistake travelers sometimes make is assuming every high-speed train leaves from Seoul Station.
Remember:
KTX → usually Seoul Station for the Busan route
SRT → Suseo Station
They are different stations in different parts of Seoul.
For travelers with suitcases, trains are usually easier than airports.
However, large-luggage storage areas can fill quickly on busy trains.
Keep valuables such as passports, wallets, phones and cameras with you rather than leaving them unattended with large luggage.
Traveling light makes every form of Korean transportation easier.
If this is your first trip to Korea, this is a very easy itinerary:
Morning
Leave your Seoul hotel
↓
Go to Seoul Station
↓
Take the KTX
↓
Arrive at Busan Station
Afternoon
Check into your Busan hotel
↓
Explore the city
↓
Visit a market, beach or nearby neighborhood
This lets you change cities without losing an entire travel day.
If you do not want to spend time comparing every possible option, remember this:
Take the KTX.
Check the SRT.
Compare the express bus.
Compare the full airport-to-airport journey before booking the flight.
Korea has one of the easiest intercity transportation networks for travelers once you understand the difference between the options.
And for most first-time visitors going from Seoul to Busan, the train is the simplest place to start.
