Some of Jeju's volcanic landscapes require a long hike.
Sangumburi Crater does not.
Located in the mid-mountain area of eastern Jeju, Sangumburi gives you one of the island's most unusual volcanic views without requiring a difficult climb.
A gently rising path leads toward the crater viewpoint, where an enormous bowl-shaped depression opens below you.
In autumn, the surrounding fields turn into one of Jeju's best-known landscapes of silver grass.
And unlike Geomunoreum, you do not need to make an advance trekking reservation.
Sangumburi is located in Jocheon-eup, Jeju City, in Jeju's inland mid-mountain region.
It is surrounded by forests, fields and other volcanic hills rather than coastal scenery.
Use the map below to check the exact location before leaving. If you are already in Jeju, tap the directions button to open a route from your current location.
Tap Directions from My Location. If Google Maps asks for location permission, choose Allow. Your current position can then be used as the starting point.

Jeju has hundreds of volcanic cones, locally called oreum.
Many of them look like small mountains with obvious slopes rising above the surrounding land.
Sangumburi is different.
The volcanic body itself is relatively low, while the crater inside is extremely large.
This gives it the appearance of an enormous depression carved into otherwise gentle terrain.
The crater measures roughly 650 meters across, about 100 meters deep and more than 2 kilometers around.
Viewed from above, it can resemble a huge natural stadium.
No.
This is one of the easiest volcanic landscapes to experience in Jeju.
You do not need to prepare for a multi-hour mountain hike.
The path from the entrance gradually rises toward the crater observation area.
For most visitors, the standard visit takes approximately 40 minutes.
If you stop frequently for photos, spend time at the crater viewpoint or walk slowly through the silver-grass areas, allow around an hour.
✔ Relatively gentle route
✔ No multi-hour trekking required
✔ Main crater view is easy to reach
✔ Easy to fit into a half-day itinerary
✔ Much simpler than a long oreum or mountain trek
When you reach the upper observation area, the landscape suddenly opens.
The deep crater sits below, covered in dense vegetation.
Beyond it, other volcanic hills and Jeju's broad mid-mountain landscape spread across the horizon.
One reason the crater is scientifically important is the diversity of plants growing inside it.
Different slopes receive different amounts of sunlight and experience slightly different conditions, allowing a wide range of vegetation to grow within the same crater.
Visitors are looking down into a protected natural environment rather than walking through the crater floor itself.
If you have seen photographs of Sangumburi before, there is a good chance they were taken in autumn.
The broad fields around the crater become filled with silver grass.
When sunlight hits the grass, the pale seed heads can look almost silver.
Wind moves across the field and creates a wave-like effect.
This is one of the most recognizable autumn scenes in Jeju.
Silver grass can look completely different depending on the light.
Midday gives you a brighter landscape.
Later afternoon can create warmer golden tones.
If photography is important to you, don't look only at the grass — use the trail, stone walls and crater landscape together in the frame.
Yes.
Sangumburi is not an autumn-only attraction.
Spring and summer bring fresh green vegetation across the crater and surrounding fields.
Autumn is the most famous period because of the silver grass.
Winter creates a quieter, more muted landscape.
If your priority is geology rather than seasonal flowers or grass, any clear-weather day can work.

For 2026, Sangumburi has announced interpretation sessions at:
09:30
10:30
11:00
13:00
14:00
15:00
16:00
Additional interpretation may sometimes be available depending on the on-site situation and staff availability.
Program schedules can change, so check the official Sangumburi notice before planning your entire day around a specific session.
Parking is available and free.
This makes Sangumburi particularly convenient for travelers exploring Jeju by rental car.
However, popular autumn days can attract many visitors, so arriving earlier can make parking and photography more comfortable.
No.
Pets are not permitted inside Sangumburi.
If you are traveling around Jeju with a dog, plan this stop accordingly.
Drone and similar aerial filming is generally prohibited in order to protect the cultural property and avoid disturbing other visitors.
Special filming may require prior consultation and permission.
For an ordinary tourist visit, do not arrive expecting to fly a drone over the crater.
Summer at Sangumburi is very different from walking inside a shaded forest.
Parts of the landscape are open and exposed to direct sun.
If you visit in July or August, bring:
✔ Water
✔ Sunscreen
✔ A hat
✔ Comfortable walking shoes
✔ A light layer if the wind is strong
Early morning is often more comfortable than the hottest part of the afternoon.
Sangumburi sits in Jeju's open mid-mountain landscape.
The crater viewpoint and grass fields can feel much windier than protected city streets.
This can be beautiful in autumn because the silver grass moves with the wind.
But in cooler weather, that same wind can make the temperature feel much lower.
Bring an extra layer in autumn and winter.
Don't photograph only the crater.
One of Sangumburi's strengths is the combination of several landscapes in one place.
Try including:
π The crater
πΎ Silver grass
πͺ¨ Jeju stone walls
πΆ The walking path
☁️ The wide sky
⛰️ Other oreums in the distance
In autumn, backlighting through the silver grass can be especially effective.
π First-time Jeju visitors
You can see a major volcanic landscape without a difficult hike.
π Autumn travelers
The silver-grass scenery is one of the main reasons Sangumburi is famous.
π· Photographers
Crater, grassland and wide skies give you several different compositions.
π¨π©π§ Families
The standard visit is much shorter than a long mountain trek.
πΆ Casual walkers
A good choice if you want nature without spending several hours hiking.
You might skip Sangumburi if:
❌ You want a free attraction
❌ You are looking specifically for ocean scenery
❌ You prefer a long, challenging hike
❌ Severe wind or bad weather is affecting the area
❌ You are traveling with a pet and cannot make other arrangements
Sangumburi is best for travelers who appreciate geology, open landscapes and easy walking rather than adventure hiking.
The official site estimates approximately 40 minutes for a normal visit. Allow around one hour if you walk slowly or take many photographs.
No. The route to the main crater viewpoint is relatively gentle and is much easier than a long Jeju mountain hike.
Sangumburi is attractive throughout the year, but autumn is especially famous for its silver-grass fields.
Sangumburi is a good reminder that you do not need to climb a difficult mountain to understand Jeju's volcanic landscape.
The walk is short.
The crater is huge.
The views are open.
And in autumn, the silver grass adds another reason to visit.
If you already visited an easy grassy oreum such as Yongnuni Oreum and a protected forest trail such as Geomunoreum, Sangumburi gives you another completely different volcanic experience.
Come for the crater.
Walk slowly through the grassland.
Check the weather.
And give yourself enough time to stop at the viewpoint instead of treating this as another place to rush through.
Sometimes one of Jeju's biggest volcanic surprises requires one of its easiest walks.
