Jeju has many waterfalls.
But Jeongbang Waterfall is different.
Instead of disappearing into a forest pool or river, the water drops from a dramatic volcanic cliff beside the sea.
That combination of waterfall + basalt cliff + rocky coastline + open ocean creates one of the most distinctive landscapes in southern Jeju.
Jeongbang is also surprisingly easy to include in a Seogwipo itinerary.
You do not need a long hike.
You do not need an advance reservation.
And from the entrance, it takes only a few minutes to walk down toward the waterfall.
Jeongbang Waterfall is located near central Seogwipo on the southern coast of Jeju Island.
This makes it much easier to combine with a Seogwipo city day than attractions located deep in Jeju's countryside.
Use the map below to check the exact entrance location. If you are already in Jeju, tap the button inside the map to open directions from your current location.
Tap Directions from My Location. If Google Maps asks for location permission, choose Allow. Your current position can then be used as the starting point.

Most waterfalls flow into a river, stream or inland pool.
Jeongbang sits directly beside Jeju's southern coastline.
The water drops from the volcanic cliff toward the rocky shore, with the open sea immediately beside it.
This means you can photograph two classic Jeju landscapes in the same frame:
The official Jeju tourism guide describes Jeongbang as Korea's only coastal waterfall where the water falls directly into the sea.
That is the feature that separates it from Jeju's other famous waterfalls.
The walk is short.
But short does not mean completely effortless.
After buying your ticket, you walk down a pine-lined stairway toward the coast.
The waterfall can normally be reached in roughly five minutes from the entrance.
The more important challenge comes after the stairs.
The viewing area around the bottom of the falls contains large natural rocks and uneven surfaces.
Wear shoes with good grip.
Take your time on wet rocks.
Be careful when the waterfall spray makes the area slippery.
Remember that you will need to climb the stairs again when leaving.
Many first-time visitors make one mistake.
They immediately walk as close to the waterfall as possible.
That gives you a powerful view of the falling water.
But it may not give you the best photograph.
Move back enough to include:
π¦ The full waterfall
πͺ¨ The basalt cliff
π Part of the sea
☁️ The sky
𧱠The rocky shoreline
The wider composition makes it much easier to understand why Jeongbang is unusual.
If the waterfall spray is strong, protect your phone or camera before moving closer. The best viewpoint is not always the closest rock to the water.
Yes, but there are two things to remember.
First, Jeju's summer weather can make the waterfall feel especially refreshing.
Second, the rocky coastal area has limited shade once you reach the bottom.
In July and August, bring:
✔ Water
✔ Sunscreen
✔ A hat
✔ Walking shoes with good grip
✔ Protection for your phone or camera from waterfall spray
Earlier in the morning can be more comfortable than the hottest part of the afternoon.
Waterfalls can look much stronger after rainfall.
But stronger water and wet weather can also make the coastal rocks more difficult to walk across.
The managing authority may restrict access when weather conditions create a safety risk.
During heavy rain, strong wind or severe weather, check the current operating status before traveling to the waterfall.
Jeongbang Waterfall's operating hours can change with the season and sunset time.
Current opening: 09:00
Current closing: Around 17:50
Current last admission: Around 17:30
Regular closure: None
Because closing time can change with sunset and weather, do not plan to arrive at the last possible minute.
I would aim to arrive at least one hour before closing.
Adults: KRW 2,000
Children: KRW 1,000
For one of Jeju's best-known natural attractions, the entrance fee is relatively inexpensive.
You do not need half a day.
For most visitors:
30 minutes — Quick waterfall view and photos
45–60 minutes — Relaxed visit with time around the rocky shoreline
Longer — Photography or combining the waterfall with a nearby coastal walk
The official local visitor information lists the normal visit as under one hour.
Families can visit, but parents should think about the terrain rather than the distance.
The route includes stairs.
The area near the waterfall has large natural rocks.
A stroller is therefore not practical for reaching the bottom viewing area.
Hold young children's hands carefully around wet and uneven surfaces.
The main lower waterfall viewing area is not an easy wheelchair-accessible route.
You need to descend stairs and cross natural rocky terrain to reach the closest viewing area.
Travelers with significant mobility limitations should consider this before buying a ticket.
The waterfall naturally gets most of the attention.
But look at the rock walls around it.
The cliffs show Jeju's volcanic geology, including prominent vertical rock formations.
The combination of dark volcanic rock, white falling water and blue sea is part of what makes the site visually distinctive.
Jeongbang Waterfall also has a long-standing local legend.
The story is connected to Seobul, also known as Xu Fu, who is said to have traveled in search of an herb of immortality for China's Qin emperor.
According to the legend, Seobul passed through this area after visiting Jeju.
A story says that he left an inscription on the cliff.
However, the inscription itself has not actually been found.
This is a legend rather than confirmed archaeological evidence, but it adds another cultural layer to a place most visitors initially see only as a natural attraction.
Jeongbang Waterfall is beautiful, but the site also has a painful modern history.
The area is associated with civilian killings during the Jeju 4·3 period.
For visitors interested in understanding Jeju beyond scenery, it is worth remembering that some famous landscapes on the island also carry difficult historical memories.
Travel does not always have to separate beautiful scenery from the history of the people who lived there.
A public parking area is available near the entrance.
Restrooms and basic visitor facilities are also available around the entrance area.
Because Jeongbang is close to central Seogwipo, you are not visiting an isolated mountain attraction.
π¦ First-time Jeju visitors
It is one of the island's most recognizable natural attractions.
π· Photographers
The waterfall, cliff and sea can all appear in the same composition.
π Travelers staying in Seogwipo
It is very convenient compared with many remote island attractions.
⏱️ Travelers with limited time
You can experience the main view without a long hike.
π Geology travelers
The volcanic coastal cliff adds another dimension beyond the waterfall itself.
You may want to skip Jeongbang Waterfall if:
❌ Stairs are difficult for you
❌ Walking across uneven rocks is unsafe for you
❌ Severe rain or wind is affecting Seogwipo
❌ You want a long forest hike rather than a short scenic stop
❌ Your priority is a fully wheelchair-accessible attraction
Current official tourism information lists admission at KRW 2,000 for adults and KRW 1,000 for children.
Most travelers need 30–60 minutes. The waterfall is only a short walk from the entrance, but you may want extra time for photographs.
Yes. Its coastal location, where the waterfall drops from the cliff directly beside the sea, is the feature that makes Jeongbang especially famous.
Jeongbang Waterfall is not a place that requires complicated planning.
That is part of its appeal.
Check the weather.
Wear shoes with good grip.
Don't arrive just before closing.
Take your time on the stairs and rocks.
And when you reach the bottom, don't look only at the waterfall.
Turn toward the ocean.
Look back at the basalt cliff.
Then look at all three together.
That combination is what makes Jeongbang different from an ordinary waterfall.
