If Yeongsil is Hallasan's dramatic cliff trail, Eorimok is the trail where the mountain slowly opens in front of you.
You begin in dense forest.
You climb through a steeper wooded section.
Then the trees suddenly begin to disappear.
The sky becomes wider.
The volcanic plateau spreads out ahead.
And by the time you reach Manse Dongsan and Witseoreum, you are walking through a completely different version of Hallasan.
Eorimok does not reach Baengnokdam summit.
But for travelers who want a moderate Hallasan hike without a summit reservation, it is one of the most practical routes on the mountain.
This is the first thing to understand before choosing the trail.
Eorimok is not a summit route.
Only the controlled summit sections of Seongpanak and Gwaneumsa normally connect with Baengnokdam.
Eorimok instead connects with the highland around Witseoreum and the trail toward Nambyeok Junction.
Seongpanak:
Choose it if Baengnokdam summit is the goal.
Yeongsil:
Choose it for dramatic cliffs and the shortest scenic approach.
Eorimok:
Choose it for forest, highland scenery and an easy connection to Witseoreum.
Eorimok is located on the northwestern side of Hallasan.
The trail begins around the Hallasan National Park Eorimok visitor area at approximately 970 meters above sea level.
From the main road, the visitor area and parking lot sit roughly 1 kilometer inside the Eorimok entrance.
Use the map below to reach the Eorimok trail area. If you are already in Jeju, tap the directions button to open a route from your current location.
🎟️ Reservation: Not required
💰 Trail admission: Free
🏔️ Baengnokdam: Not accessible from Eorimok
📏 Eorimok → Witseoreum: About 4.7 km
⏱️ Typical ascent: About 2–3 hours
🌅 August trail entry begins: 05:00
⏰ August Eorimok entry cutoff: 15:00
➡️ Witseoreum → Nambyeok direction cutoff: 14:00
⬇️ Witseoreum descent deadline: 17:00
🥾 Difficulty: Moderate
The first part of the route is enclosed by forest.
You cross the Eorimok valley area and begin gaining elevation beneath a dense canopy.
This section can feel cool and quiet compared with the exposed highlands above.
Do not let the forest fool you into thinking the entire route will feel easy.
The first major climb comes relatively early.
The first forest climb is one of the sections where beginners often use too much energy. Keep a steady pace rather than trying to climb quickly.
As you climb toward Sajebi Dongsan, the character of the route starts changing.
The forest gradually becomes thinner.
More light reaches the trail.
And the mountain begins to feel larger.
This transition is one of the most satisfying parts of Eorimok.
You are moving from Hallasan's forest environment toward its open high-altitude plateau.
Then the scenery opens dramatically.
Manse Dongsan sits around the 1,500–1,600 meter elevation zone.
From this part of the route, the view can extend toward Hallasan's upper mountain area.
Janggumok appears to one side while the Witseoreum volcanic cones rise on the other.
The enclosed forest atmosphere is now largely behind you.
This is where Eorimok becomes a highland hike.
Once you reach the open highland, turn around occasionally. The views behind you toward Jeju and the lower oreums can be just as impressive as the mountain ahead.
Once the forest disappears, you lose much of its protection.
The wind becomes more noticeable.
The sun feels stronger.
Cloud and fog can move across the plateau quickly.
Even in August, carrying a light outer layer is useful.
Do not judge mountain conditions from Jeju City.
Weather around Witseoreum can be very different.
Check the official Hallasan trail status before leaving.
For most Eorimok hikers, Witseoreum is the main destination.
The name roughly refers to the three oreums located high on Hallasan.
They are commonly known as Bulgeun Oreum, Nuweun Oreum and Saekki Oreum.
After climbing through forest and highland, reaching Witseoreum feels like arriving on the roof of Jeju's interior.
The shelter area is also the main decision point.
You can rest and return via Eorimok.
You can descend through Yeongsil.
Or, if the trail is open and you have enough time, continue toward Nambyeok Junction.
If you are not tied to a parked car, this is one of the best ways to experience Hallasan without climbing Baengnokdam.
Why do this?
Eorimok gives you the gradual change from forest to volcanic plateau.
Yeongsil gives you the dramatic cliff scenery on the way down.
You avoid repeating exactly the same trail.
And you experience two very different sides of Hallasan in one hike.
Eorimok and Yeongsil are different trailheads. If you leave a rental car at Eorimok, you must plan how to return to it after descending through Yeongsil.
Trail entry begins: 05:00
Eorimok trailhead entry cutoff: 15:00
From Witseoreum toward Nambyeok: Cut off from 14:00
Witseoreum descent: Must begin by 17:00
These times exist so hikers can leave the mountain before darkness.
Do not build your plan around arriving at the last possible minute.
Eorimok is currently outside Hallasan's summit-reservation zones.
You can therefore choose Eorimok much more spontaneously than a Baengnokdam summit hike.
However, trail closure because of severe weather can still happen.
The forested lower trail can feel comfortable in summer.
The upper plateau is different.
Once the trees disappear, there is much less shade.
✔ Bring plenty of water
✔ Use sunscreen
✔ Wear a hat
✔ Carry a light wind or rain layer
✔ Bring snacks
✔ Wear shoes with good grip
Eorimok is beautiful throughout the year.
But autumn is especially good because the forest and highland give you two different seasonal landscapes during one hike.
The lower section brings autumn forest color.
The open plateau above gives you wide mountain views and clearer air on good-weather days.
This transition makes Eorimok particularly satisfying in fall.
Snow-covered Eorimok can be spectacular.
It can also become a real winter mountain hike.
Ice, deep snow, low temperatures and strong wind can change the difficulty completely.
Use appropriate winter footwear and traction equipment when required.
Do not treat the boardwalk sections as proof that winter hiking will be easy.
✔ Water
✔ Food or energy snacks
✔ Hiking or walking shoes
✔ Windproof / waterproof layer
✔ Extra layer
✔ Sunscreen
✔ Hat
✔ Charged phone
✔ Winter traction equipment when conditions require it
🥾 First-time Hallasan hikers

🎟️ Travelers without a reservation
No summit reservation is required.
🔄 Travelers combining two routes
Eorimok up and Yeongsil down is an excellent non-summit Hallasan combination.
Yeongsil may be the better choice if:
❌ You want the shortest approach to Witseoreum
❌ Dramatic cliff scenery is your highest priority
❌ You want to spend less time climbing through forest
Eorimok and Yeongsil eventually meet around Witseoreum, but the experience getting there is very different.
No. Eorimok reaches the Witseoreum highland area but does not connect to the Baengnokdam summit.
No. Eorimok is currently not part of Hallasan's summit reservation system.
The official tourism information lists the route to Witseoreum at approximately 4.7 km and around 2–3 hours, depending on pace and conditions.
If Yeongsil shows you Hallasan's dramatic cliffs, Eorimok shows you how the mountain changes with altitude.
Start beneath the trees.
Take your time through Sajebi Dongsan.
Watch the landscape open at Manse Dongsan.
Then enjoy the high mountain atmosphere around Witseoreum.
If transportation allows, descend through Yeongsil instead of returning the same way.
That combination gives you forest, highland and cliff scenery in one day.
You don't need Baengnokdam to experience several completely different faces of Hallasan.
