If you have already seen photos of Seongsan Ilchulbong, you may think the best view is from the top.
It isn't always.
One of the most beautiful ways to see Jeju's famous volcanic peak is actually from the coastline below — at Gwangchigi Beach.
This quiet stretch of coast in eastern Jeju is known for its dark volcanic shoreline, exposed lava formations, shallow tidal pools and wide-open views toward Seongsan Ilchulbong.
Unlike many major tourist attractions in Jeju, you don't need a ticket.
You can simply stop, walk and enjoy the coast.
Gwangchigi Beach is located in Seongsan-eup on the eastern side of Jeju Island.
It sits between the Seongsan Ilchulbong and Seopjikoji area, making it especially easy to include in an eastern Jeju itinerary.
Use the interactive map below to check exactly where Gwangchigi Beach is located. If you are already in Jeju, tap the button inside the map area to open directions from your current location.
Tap Directions from My Location. If your phone or browser asks for location permission, choose Allow. Google Maps can then use your current position as the starting point for directions to Gwangchigi Beach.

Jeju has many beautiful beaches.
But don't come here expecting a typical white-sand swimming beach.
Gwangchigi Beach is special because of its volcanic landscape.
When the tide goes out, dark volcanic formations that are normally hidden beneath the sea become visible.
Water remains between the rocks, forming shallow reflective tidal pools.
Green algae often covers parts of the volcanic rock, creating one of eastern Jeju's most distinctive coastal landscapes.
Many travelers go directly to Seongsan Ilchulbong.
That's understandable.
But there is one simple problem.
When you're standing on Seongsan Ilchulbong, you can't really see its complete shape.
From Gwangchigi Beach, you can.
The volcanic peak becomes part of the entire landscape rather than simply the place you are standing on.
You can frame the sea, rocks, tidal pools, sky and Seongsan Ilchulbong together in one photograph.
That is why Gwangchigi Beach is one of the easiest places in eastern Jeju to photograph the famous peak from a distance.
Yes.
If you are willing to wake up early, sunrise is one of the best times to visit Gwangchigi Beach.
The beach faces eastern Jeju, and the morning light can illuminate the coastline while Seongsan Ilchulbong rises in the background.
Sunrise is beautiful, but don't cancel your visit just because you cannot arrive that early. The beach is also worth visiting during the day, especially when the tide is low.
This may be the most useful tip for visiting Gwangchigi Beach.
The coastline looks very different depending on the tide.
At higher tide, much of the volcanic shoreline can disappear beneath the water.
At lower tide, the exposed lava formations, green algae and tidal pools become much easier to see.
If volcanic rocks and tidal pools are important to your photos, check the local tide conditions before you leave.
Low tide exposes more of the volcanic coastline, but it also creates another issue.
The rocks can be slippery.
Wet volcanic rocks and green algae can be very slippery.
Wear shoes with good grip.
Do not rush across wet rocks just to get a photograph.
Always pay attention to the incoming tide.
A photograph is not worth getting injured.
Spring can give this part of eastern Jeju a completely different atmosphere.
Yellow canola flowers can appear around the Seongsan area, adding bright color to the volcanic coast.
Flower timing varies from year to year, so don't depend on an exact bloom date from an old travel post.
Yes.
But think of it as a short scenic coastal walk rather than a long beach promenade.
This is a place to slow down.
Look at the rocks.
Watch the sea.
Take photographs.
Then continue exploring eastern Jeju.
Gwangchigi Beach is also where Jeju Olle Trail Route 1 ends and Route 2 begins.
There is no separate entrance ticket required to visit the natural beach area.
You don't need to make a reservation.
You can simply include it as a flexible stop during your eastern Jeju trip.
30 minutes — Quick view and photographs
45–60 minutes — Relaxed coastal walk
Longer — Sunrise or serious photography
For most travelers, around an hour is enough.
Gwangchigi Beach is in the Seongsan area of eastern Jeju.
If you are driving, it is easy to combine with other places in eastern Jeju.
If you are using buses, the Seongsan area is also one of the more practical tourism areas on the eastern side of the island.
Try to group your Jeju itinerary by region. If you are visiting Seongsan and Gwangchigi Beach, keep most of that day in eastern Jeju instead of repeatedly crossing the island.
Pets of different sizes are currently allowed at Gwangchigi Beach.
Dogs should be kept on a leash or chest harness and owners should clean up immediately after their pets.
Jeju can be hot and humid in July and August.
The coast is exposed and has limited shade.

Early morning and late afternoon are usually more comfortable than the middle of the day.
Jeju is famous for its wind.
Even when the temperature looks comfortable, the coast can feel much colder on a windy morning.
If you are visiting around sunrise during cooler months, bring an extra layer.
Don't immediately walk all the way toward the water.
First look at the entire landscape.
Try placing volcanic rocks or tidal pools in the foreground with Seongsan Ilchulbong farther away.
This creates much more depth in the photograph.
Try both:

❌ Weather conditions are poor
❌ You already have several similar coastal stops planned
There are many beautiful coastlines in Jeju.
You don't need to visit every one.
Choose the places that fit your trip.
Yes. The beach itself is free to visit.
Sunrise is beautiful, while low tide gives you a better chance to see the volcanic rock formations and tidal pools.
Yes.
That wide view of Seongsan Ilchulbong is one of the main reasons travelers come here.
Don't think of Gwangchigi Beach as another attraction you need to complete.
There isn't a major entrance.
There isn't a complicated walking route.
And that's part of the appeal.
Check the weather.
Check the tide if photography matters to you.
Walk slowly.
Look across the water toward Seongsan Ilchulbong.
Sometimes the best view of a famous place is from somewhere nearby.
