Not every oreum in Jeju can simply be visited whenever you want.
Geomunoreum is different.
This forest-covered volcanic cone in eastern Jeju is part of the UNESCO World Heritage property known as Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes.
It is also the volcanic source associated with the extraordinary lava-tube system that extends toward Jeju's northeastern coast.
Because the environment is carefully protected, visitors normally need to make a reservation in advance before hiking Geomunoreum.
That is the most important thing to know before you go.
Geomunoreum is located in Jocheon-eup on the eastern side of Jeju City.
The hike begins around the Jeju World Natural Heritage Center.
Use the map below to check the entrance area before leaving. If you are already in Jeju, tap the directions button to open a route from your current location.
Tap Directions from My Location. If Google Maps asks for location permission, choose Allow. Your current position can then be used as the starting point.

⚠️ Weather: Access may be suspended during severe weather
This is the biggest difference between Geomunoreum and many other Jeju oreums.
You should not simply arrive and expect to hike.
The number of visitors is controlled to protect the UNESCO natural environment.
Reservations normally open at 09:00 on the first day of the month before your visit.
Online and telephone reservations are accepted.
Reservations can normally be made until 17:00 on the day before your visit, subject to availability.
For groups of more than 20 people, contact the site by telephone.
If you want to visit on September 15, reservations normally begin on August 1.
Popular dates can fill up, so do not leave your booking until the last minute.
You can use the official Jeju World Natural Heritage Center reservation page.
Open the official Geomunoreum reservation page.
Official Geomunoreum Reservation
Step 2Select the date you want to visit.
Step 3Choose an available departure time.
Step 4Complete the visitor information.
Step 5Save your reservation details and arrive early on the day of your trek.
If the booking interface is difficult to use in English, try your browser's translation function or ask your accommodation staff for help.
Having a reservation does not mean you should arrive at the exact departure time.
Visitors need to complete ticketing and registration before entering the protected trail.
Plan to arrive at least 10 minutes before your reserved time so you can register and receive the required access pass.
Geomunoreum uses timed departures rather than allowing visitors to enter whenever they want.
Official tourism pages currently show departures beginning at 09:00 in 30-minute intervals.
However, official listings differ slightly on the final departure time.
Use the actual available time slots on the official reservation page as your final reference when booking.
Some later departures may also restrict which courses you can complete.
There is no reason to automatically choose the longest route.
Choose based on your fitness, schedule and how much of the volcanic landscape you actually want to explore.
Distance: About 2.1 km
Time: About 1 hour
Best for travelers who want a shorter introduction to Geomunoreum.
Distance: About 5 km
Time: About 2 hours 30 minutes
A better choice if the volcanic crater and forest environment are the main reason for your visit.
Distance: About 6.7 km
Time: About 3 hours 30 minutes
Choose this if you have enough time and are comfortable with a longer nature walk.
Geomunoreum is not simply another green hill.
Lava erupted from this volcanic system and flowed northeast toward the coast.
As the lava traveled, it helped form an extraordinary system of underground lava tubes.
That geological relationship is one reason Geomunoreum is so important to understanding Jeju.
The surrounding landscape contains volcanic features such as lava caves, collapsed pits and other lava-related formations.
Many travelers hear “volcano” and imagine an exposed grassy hill.
Geomunoreum feels different.
A large part of the volcanic landscape is covered by dense forest.
The name is commonly associated with its unusually dark appearance.
As you move through the trail, the experience can feel more like walking through a protected forest ecosystem than climbing a typical open oreum.
That makes it especially different from places such as Yongnuni Oreum.
Wear proper walking shoes.
Visitors wearing slippers or high heels may be refused entry.
This is a protected natural trail with uneven ground, slopes and forest surfaces.
✔ Walking shoes
✔ Hiking shoes
✔ Shoes with reasonable grip
❌ Slippers
❌ High heels
This is easy to overlook.
There are no restroom facilities along the Geomunoreum hiking route.
Use the restroom at the visitor area before beginning your trek.
This matters especially if you choose the 2.5-hour or 3.5-hour course.
Because Geomunoreum is a protected UNESCO natural environment, food restrictions apply.
Do not plan a picnic on the trail.
Follow the instructions given during registration regarding what may be carried into the protected area.
Water is a much better thing to prioritize, especially in warmer weather.
Geomunoreum is not guaranteed to open in every weather condition.
Access may be suspended when weather creates safety or conservation concerns.
If rain, strong wind or severe weather is affecting Jeju, check the official status before traveling to Geomunoreum.
Adults: KRW 2,000
Youth & children: KRW 1,000
Group rates and exemption rules may also apply.
The entrance fee itself is inexpensive.
The more important issue is getting the reservation you want.
Regular trekking is not available on:
Every Tuesday
Seollal — Lunar New Year's Day
Chuseok — Korean Thanksgiving Day
Severe weather can also cause temporary closure.
Do not schedule your next attraction based only on the official hiking time.
You also need time for parking, registration, ticketing and the pre-hike process.
I would roughly allow:
Short course: Around 1.5 hours total
Crater course: Around 3 hours total
Full course: Around 4 hours total
Adding a little buffer will make the day much less stressful.
π Geology travelers
This is one of the key places for understanding how Jeju's lava-tube system was created.
π UNESCO travelers
Geomunoreum is part of Jeju's World Natural Heritage landscape.
π³ Forest walkers
The experience combines volcanic scenery with dense vegetation.
π₯Ύ Travelers who enjoy structured hikes
Timed entry and controlled access make this very different from an ordinary open trail.
π· Nature photographers
Forest, crater and volcanic landforms provide very different scenes along the routes.
You may want to skip Geomunoreum if:
❌ You do not want to make a reservation
❌ You need a completely flexible arrival time
❌ You are wearing unsuitable footwear
❌ You have very limited time in Jeju
❌ The weather is unstable
If flexibility matters more than UNESCO geology, another easy-access oreum may fit your trip better.
Yes. Normal trekking at Geomunoreum requires an advance reservation.
If your main goal is simply to experience the site without spending half a day hiking, the approximately 2.1 km summit course is the easiest starting point.
You should not depend on same-day availability. Book in advance through the official reservation system.
Geomunoreum requires slightly more planning than most Jeju attractions.
But that is part of the reason the landscape is so well protected.
Reserve first.
Choose your course realistically.
Arrive early.
Wear proper shoes.
Use the restroom before starting.
And don't treat the hike like a race.
If Manjanggul shows you the underground result of Jeju's volcanic activity, Geomunoreum helps you understand where that volcanic story began.
