If you want to see a traditional Korean village that still feels connected to the landscape around it, Andong Hahoe Folk Village is one of the best places to go.
This is not a modern hanok street built for tourists.
Hahoe has been home to the Pungsan Ryu clan for generations, with traditional houses, narrow village lanes, old trees and the Nakdonggang River wrapping around the settlement.
The mountains and river are not just scenery.
They are part of the reason the village developed here in the first place.
In 2010, Hahoe and Yangdong were inscribed together as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
But Hahoe is also famous for something much more lively than old architecture.
The village is the home of the traditional Hahoe Mask Dance, one of Korea's most recognizable folk performances.

π Why Is Hahoe Village UNESCO World Heritage?
Hahoe is not important simply because it has old houses.
The entire village shows how a traditional Korean clan settlement was organized around family, Confucian culture, agriculture and the surrounding landscape.
UNESCO describes Hahoe and Yangdong as two of Korea's best-preserved historic clan villages.
They include large traditional residences, study buildings, pavilions and smaller thatched-roof homes.
The placement of these buildings between mountains, fields and rivers is part of their cultural significance.
One thing to remember while walking is that Hahoe is not just an outdoor museum.
People still live here.
Respect private homes, do not enter closed courtyards and keep your voice down in residential lanes.
π Do Not Miss the Hahoe Mask Dance
If your timing works, the traditional mask dance should be one of the main parts of your visit.
Hahoe Byeolsingut Tallori combines masks, dance, music, humor and social satire.
You do not need to understand every Korean word to enjoy it.
The exaggerated masks and movements make much of the story easy to follow visually.

π Why Does the Village Look So Different?
The name Hahoe is closely connected with the way the Nakdonggang River bends around the village.
This curved river landscape is one of the main reasons Hahoe looks completely different from a normal flat hanok district.
Walk toward the river and you will see:

Do not spend the entire visit only between houses.
The riverbank is one of the best places to understand why the village was built here.
⛰ Buyongdae: The Best View of Hahoe Village
If you want to understand the shape of Hahoe, Buyongdae Cliff gives you the best perspective.
The cliff rises roughly 64 meters above the river on the opposite side of the village.
From above, you can see the traditional houses, fields, river and mountains together.
π· Photo Tip
The view from Buyongdae is completely different from photographs taken inside the village.
Inside Hahoe: architecture and street details.
From Buyongdae: the entire landscape and river curve.

If your schedule is tight, prioritize the village itself.
If you have half a day or longer, adding Buyongdae makes the trip much more complete.
π₯ 2026 Hahoe Traditional Fireworks
One of the most unusual cultural events in Andong is Hahoe Seonyu Julbul Nori.
Instead of modern fireworks exploding high in the sky, glowing sparks fall from ropes stretched above the river near Buyongdae.
The reflections on the Nakdonggang River make the event completely different from a normal fireworks festival.

π Andong Mask Dance Festival 2026
If you are planning an autumn visit, there is another reason to watch the calendar.
π ANDONG MASK DANCE FESTIVAL 2026
September 24 – October 4, 2026
September 24 – October 4, 2026
The festival brings together Korean and international mask performances, traditional events and special Hahoe Village programs.
This can be an excellent time to visit if you want more cultural performances.
But it also means Andong will be busier than usual.
π What Is the Best Season?
Spring brings fresh greenery and comfortable walking weather.
Summer makes the village and river landscape intensely green, but afternoons can be hot and humid.
Autumn is one of my favorite times because the weather is cooler and major cultural events take place around Andong.
Winter gives the village a much quieter atmosphere. Traditional houses and thatched roofs can look especially beautiful after snow.

π Is Hahoe Village Difficult to Walk?
The village itself is not a mountain hike.
But you will spend a lot of time outdoors on village lanes, dirt surfaces and riverside paths.
Wear comfortable walking shoes.
In summer, shade can be limited in open areas.
In winter, exposed areas near the river can feel very cold.

If this is your first visit, I would not try to finish Hahoe in one hour.
The village works much better when you have enough time to leave the main road and walk through the smaller lanes.
❓ BEST 3 QUESTIONS
1. How much is Andong Hahoe Folk Village?
Regular admission is 5,000 won for adults, 2,500 won for youths and 1,500 won for children.
2. Is Hahoe Village worth visiting without a car?
Yes. Public buses connect Andong with Hahoe Village, although you should check the latest timetable before traveling.
3. What is the best thing to see at Hahoe Village?
The village itself is the main attraction, but if your schedule allows it, combine the traditional houses and river landscape with the Hahoe Mask Dance and a Buyongdae viewpoint visit.
πΏ A Local's Final Advice
Do not visit Hahoe thinking it is simply another hanok village.
The most important part is the relationship between the houses and the landscape.
Walk between the old walls.
Look at the thatched roofs.
Then leave the village lanes and go toward the river.
Look across at Buyongdae.
If the mask dance is running, watch it.
If you have enough time, see the village again from above.
That is when Hahoe starts to make sense.
It is not just a collection of old Korean buildings.
It is a village shaped by family, Confucian traditions, fields, mountains and a river that has curved around it for generations.
